Nativity Adult Formation Offerings Beginning January 11

The Book Class, Bibb Chapel – Ted Briggs

Come join us for weekly discussion of two books this Spring that offer perspectives for our spiritual journey through Lent to Easter and beyond. Discussion leaders alternate by week, providing background and summarizing the major topics, although the class ultimately sets its own agenda during the discussion.

Pre-Easter:  The Road to Wisdom: On Truth, Science, Faith, and Trust  by Dr Francis S Collins (2024)

Collins offers a guide to navigating distrust and division by finding common ground in truth, science, faith, and trust, reflecting on his COVID-19 pandemic role and depolarizing efforts. He makes a robust, thoughtful case for each of these sources--their reliability, and their limits. As the COVID-19 pandemic revealed, we have become not just a hyper-partisan society but also a deeply cynical one, distrustful of traditional sources of knowledge and wisdom. There is a wealth of material here for discussion as well as helping to address many of our unresolved COVID issues/experiences.

Collins is a scientist of faith. (He wrote about his spiritual journey in his first book, Language of God, which became a New York Times Best Seller). He began his scientific work on the Human Genome Project then later served as Director of National Institutes of Health under three administrations.

Post-Easter: God Has a Dream: A Vision of Hope for Our Time by Desmond Tutu (2004)

Tutu affirms the goodness of creation and humanity's co-partnership with God in the ongoing task of making a better and more just world. He encourages us to throw ourselves unstintingly into acts of transformation by setting aside our personal ambitions and serving others. His eloquent and heart-felt writing will resurrect hope in your heart.

Tutu authored this book as “a cumulative expression of my life's work,” before his retirement in 2010. It is a hopeful roadmap for a world united by love, built through courageous, compassionate action. With his characteristic humor, Tutu offers an extremely personal and liberating message. He helps us to "see with the eyes of the heart" and to cultivate the qualities of love, forgiveness, humility, generosity, and courage that we need to change ourselves and our world.

We will focus on John Gatta's book "Green Gospel: Foundations of Ecotheology". As John states in the preface to his book "The reflections focus on the gifts for healing both the earth and ourselves that I take to be offered in abundance - but not always recognized as such - in Christianity."

  • Daughters of the King

The Daughers of the King is an order or, a community under a religious rule; especially one requiring members to take solemn vows. We don’t just enroll as members and attend meetings; we take life-long vows to follow the Rule of Prayer and the Rule of Service.

    What is a Rule?

A Rule is a prescribed guide for conduct or action by laws or regulations prescribed by the founder of a religious order for observance by its members. Members of the Order undertake a Rule of Life, incorporating the Rule of Prayer and Service. By reaffirmation of the promises made at Baptism and Confirmation, a Daughter pledges herself to a life-long program of prayer, service, and evangelism, dedicated to the spread of Christ’s Kingdom and the strengthening of the spiritual life of her parish. The Rule of Prayer is a commitment to thoughtfully pray daily, and through the Rule of Service, a Daughter seeks daily to do the will of God.

    The Motto of the Order

    For His Sake…

I am but one, but I am one.

I cannot do everything, but I can do something.

What I can do, I ought to do.

What I ought to do, by the grace of God I will do.

Lord, what will you have me do?

  • Cursillo

A new Christian community is formed as Episcopalians from all across the Diocese come together to learn, worship, and experience Christian joy together at Camp McDowell. Cursillo weekends are a time of spiritual renewal and  feature a series of talks by lay staff members as well as meditations and daily Eucharist celebrated by clergy. Cursillo weekends are funded by donations from those who have gone through a previous weekend, so there is no cost to attend. Contact David Collette (256-527-2560) or Debbie Collette (256-527-5050).
