“The Soul of America: The Battle for Our Better Angels” by Jon Meacham

    The Book Class

    Various Discussion Leaders

    Location: Joffrion Library

Come join us Sunday morning as we continue our discussions about our culture, society, and what our better angels might have us do. It is easy to lose one’s perspective and see only the immediate darkness and current problems. Meacham’s book provides a broader perspective of American history and a wonderful springboard for discussion.

“History, …, is not a fairy tale. It is more often tragic than comic, full of broken hearts and broken promises, disappointed hopes and dreams delayed. But progress is possible. Hope is sustaining. Fear can be overcome. What follows is the story of how we have endured moments of madness and of injustice, giving the better angels of which Lincoln spoke on the eve of the Civil War a chance to prevail—and how we can again.”

  • Daughters of the King

The Daughers of the King is an order or, a community under a religious rule; especially one requiring members to take solemn vows. We don’t just enroll as members and attend meetings; we take life-long vows to follow the Rule of Prayer and the Rule of Service.

    What is a Rule?

A Rule is a prescribed guide for conduct or action by laws or regulations prescribed by the founder of a religious order for observance by its members. Members of the Order undertake a Rule of Life, incorporating the Rule of Prayer and Service. By reaffirmation of the promises made at Baptism and Confirmation, a Daughter pledges herself to a life-long program of prayer, service, and evangelism, dedicated to the spread of Christ’s Kingdom and the strengthening of the spiritual life of her parish. The Rule of Prayer is a commitment to thoughtfully pray daily, and through the Rule of Service, a Daughter seeks daily to do the will of God.

    The Motto of the Order

    For His Sake…

I am but one, but I am one.

I cannot do everything, but I can do something.

What I can do, I ought to do.

What I ought to do, by the grace of God I will do.

Lord, what will you have me do?

  • Cursillo

A new Christian community is formed as Episcopalians from all across the Diocese come together to learn, worship, and experience Christian joy together at Camp McDowell. Cursillo weekends are a time of spiritual renewal and  feature a series of talks by lay staff members as well as meditations and daily Eucharist celebrated by clergy. Cursillo weekends are funded by donations from those who have gone through a previous weekend, so there is no cost to attend.
